The Bawdsey Manor Estate, where the River Deben meets the sea

Bawdsey Manor enjoys a magnificent position on the Suffolk coast where the River Deben meets the sea.  At the turn of the 20th century Bawdsey Manor was at the heart of Sir Cuthbert Quilter's 'private kingdom', now it provides a glorious setting for a range of educational and recreational pursuits.

The estate has much that is of interest to visitors. Cliffs from the Pleistocene period, a Site of Special Scientific (SSSI), can be viewed from the Suffolk Coastal Path. There is access to the River Deben, Bawdsey Beach, the North Sea foreshore and Suffolk Coastal Path from Bawdsey Quay.  From April to October, and at other times by arrangement, a passenger ferry operates between Bawdsey Quay and Old Felixstowe.  This is an area of outstanding natural beauty, an AONB.  It's a landscape of astonishing beauty and variety; a mosaic of heath-land, marsh, woodland and farmland, shimmering estuaries and soft golden cliffs.  If your interest lies in walking, sailing or bird-watching this is a wonderful place to visit.  On Bawdsey Quay is your RYA accredited sailing centre, BQWC, and Bawdsey Haven Yacht Club.  The history of the Second World War and the development of RADAR is visible in buildings, artefacts and pictures all over the estate.

We are 9 miles from Woodbridge, at the end of the B1083 which runs down through the Suffolk Sandlings to Bawdsey Quay.  The British Rail East Suffolk Line from Woodbridge or Melton stations gives easy access to London, Cambridge and Norwich.

Sutton Hoo, the burial site of Anglo Saxon kings, is minutes from Bawdsey and the castles at Orford and Framlingham intrigue historians of all ages.  For music lovers the Aldeburgh Festival at Snape Maltings is just up the coast, as are Literary Festivals at Woodbridge, Aldeburgh and Southwold. The whole area is a paradise for artists and art lovers of every sort.
