In 1936 Bawdsey Manor became a top-secret research establishment for the Ministry of Defence (MoD). Following successful experiments at nearby Orfordness a team of scientists moved to Bawdsey Manor to continue their work on Radar. At Bawdsey Radar was developed to detect aerial threats as they approached Britain’s coastline. Bawdsey became the prototype for a chain of radar stations that were to protect Britain during the Second World War. After the War Bawdsey Manor remained in the hands of the MoD as a training school. In 1994 it was bought by the present owners, the Toettcher family. This important era in local and national history is preserved at Bawdsey Manor. You can visit the original Transmitter Block, which houses the Magic Ear Exhibition detailing the development of Radar. The Transmitter Block and the exhibition is managed by the Bawdsey Radar Trust, a not for profit organisation dedicated to preserving and restoring the building. The Magic Ear Exhibition, on display in The Transmitter Block, will be open on the following dates in 2010: Pictures Transmitter mast (no longer standing). Photograph from Mrs Neale |
